Spring Term 2023

Y5/6 Swimming Gala

1at Edisford Pool

Wednesday 29th March

Team: Georgia (C), Anna, Sophie, Matilda, Abigail, Stanley, Zayd, Abbas, Michael.

Always and exciting, noisy (yet supportive) event in the sporting calendar.  10 schools gathered together at Ribblesdale pool to compete  against each other. Our children performed, as always, with determination and self belief, despite some of our team members being very nervous. All team members performed to the best of their ability and Mrs Heyworth could not have been prouder. Special mentions to Abbas and Stanley who stepped up as Year 4 to compete against some strong Y6 club swimmers, and to Michael, Abigail and Matilda who found it challenging, but ensured that they finished their races and should feel proud of their achievements. Zayd was the veteran in the boys team and proved to be a fantastic captain to the boys. Well done Zayd for looking after your team so well and for showing real fighting spirit in your own races.

CONGRATULATIONS to:

Georgia who came home with a SILVER medal in the backstroke race

Sophie  who brought home a BRONZE medal in the freestyle

The girls medley team ( Georgia, Sophie and Anna) who brought home SILVER medals

Many thanks to Mrs Dixon for helping with transport and supporting Mrs Heyworth with the team whilst poolside.

Y3/4 Glow Dodgeball

at Oakhill College.

Friday 3rd March 2022

Team – Mohammed R, Alfie, Eshaal, Zayn, Aaisha A, Shifa, Aleena I, Aliza

On Friday Morning, eight excited children from Foxes travelled to Oakhill College in Whalley to participate in a FUN glow Dodgeball competition. 23 teams took part in an event designed to encourage participation and a love of physical activity. It was certainly FUN….and VERY noisy and dark!

Children had to score their opponents at the end of each match based on their honesty whilst playing. Whilst we didn’t win anything at the end of the event, Mrs Heyworth was extremely impressed and proud of the whole team: All of the children displayed excellent determination, passion, teamwork, self belief, honesty and respect for all involved. It was  thoroughly enjoyable morning and the children’s behaviour was impeccable. Thank you children.

Thank you to Shifa’s parents for helping with transport to and from the event.

Y5/6 Football

At Roefield 3G

Monday 27th February

Team: Eesa, Zayd, Haris, Deen, Bilaal, Michael, Mohammed F, Muhammed I

Our third  meeting of the league competition and we yet again saw further improvements in the team’s ability. We played 4 games over the evening , winning 2 and narrowly losing 2. Our 4 – 0 victory over St Leonard’s was our proudest achievement as we have been unable to beat this school in the past.

The boys continue to work well together with passion and determination and they never let their heads drop when things don’t go as well as we would like. This always makes Mrs Heyworth so very proud.

It was really lovely to have a supportive team of Dad’s on the side lines who also modelled Balderstone’s excellent sportsmanship. Thank you Dads for being such positive role models and supporting the boys in the freezing cold.

A special Thank you to Mrs Riaz (Deen’s Mum) who once again stepped in to help Mrs Heyworth manage the team.

Y3/4 Gymnastics

at St Augustine's RC School

Tuesday 21st February 2023

Team: Laura, William, Liyaana, Maisie, Zac

Mrs Gow, Mrs Riddell and Mrs Heyworth had a wonderful time with these 5 children. What fun they are and how proud we were! One of the most daunting competitions on our sporting calendar as each child has to perform and be judged individually in front of a small panel of judges.

After attending some early morning practices at school over recent weeks, the children were ready to compete against many other local schools. Each child learnt a set routine consisting of a variety of rolls, balances and jumps. They also learn how to vault onto a box, travel and dismount. Children were marked on their precision, accuracy and control in both events. They had two opportunities on the vault , with  their best score counting towards the final mark.

We are extremely proud of how each individual performed. A couple of the team members were extremely nervous, but they did not let this show in their performance! They all tried their very best and put in lots of practice at home as well as at school. We finished 5th overall, which is a great achievement in a field of so many teams. Well done Team - Be proud of your achievements!

Monday 23rd January

Report by Zayd.

Team: Zayd, Bilaal, Deen, Haris, Eesa, Mohammed Faizan, Michael and Muhammed I

Our first game was against Oakhill. It was a very tough game. However, we drew to them but unfortunately, Deen hit a BANGER which struck the post heavily.

Our second game was against Moorland. We put great pressure yet still they managed to put a last minute goal in the net. However, Eesa (GK) was able to make a miraculous goal after that!

Out third game was against Reed - it was amazing! We put constant pressure, great teamwork and Michael showed his abilities to defend. Bilaal (our captain) assisted Zayd in two amazing goals from one wing to another, but in the dying embers, they luckily scored one goal and won a penalty which snuck past Eesa.

Our next game was dominated by us. We showed great resilience and Deen and Bilaal scored one goal each which gave us a great win. Harris struck a STUNNER that was so close to scoring but the keeper from their team was on point.

Our last game was against Reed once again. We beat them 2-1 thanks to Bilaal who shot at the keeper, which rebounded off him into the net. In the last minute, they were on the counter acctack but we had nothing to worry about because Eesa made an astonishing save that ended the tournament with a last win.

A great big THANK YOU to Mrs Riddell and Mrs Riaz (Deen's mum) for coaching us with great tactics!

Y5/6 Physical Activity Festival

at Roefield Leisure

Monday 16th January 1 - 3pm

Team: Safaa ,Falak, Imaan, Alayna, Khadijah P, Mohammed Faizan, Sophie, Aisha.

What an amazingly active afternoon we have had!  The physical activity festival began with a session in Roefield's gymnasium.  We got on the treadmills, steppers, cross trainers, rowing machines and even did some weights and boxing sparring, Then we moved on to something far more relaxing - yoga!  We learnt how to breathe and stretch in unison to relax our bodies and minds. We relaxed so much that Imaan nearly had a nap! Unfortunately, the relaxation was short-lived as we moved into our two most aerobic and lively sessions - spin class on the static bikes and then HIiT (high intensity interval training). WOW - we worked hard, danced hard and even Mrs Gow joined in!  The festival was a great taster of new sports and activities and we all thought we might like a new school gym and weekly relaxing yoga session.  This group of 8 were amazing throughout the afternoon and gave it their all.  Special mentions to Falak, Imaan, Khadijah, Mohammed-Faizan and Safaa who all won sporting values certificated for their determination and self-belief.

Y5/6 Girls Football

at Roefield 3G

Friday 6th January 2-4pm

Team: Anna ( C), Khadijah M, Amaya, Alayna, Hannah, Abigail, Georgia, Aleena, Matilda, Daisy.

After a term of skills training with Dan, our girls enjoyed their first ever experience of football matches when they played 5 games against local schools. The girls grew in confidence and gained a better understanding of the game as the afternoon progressed. Our first game was a friendly against St Leonard's, where we learnt the basics, especially in defence. It was a heavy loss (6-0) but the girls remained in good spirit and learnt a lot.

Our first competitive game was against Pendle: Amaya was getting to grips and beginning perform well in defence, Matilda understood the goal keeping rules a little more Anna and Abigail managed to get the ball upfield a couple of times, which resulted in our first ever goal from Anna! We lost 3-1, but were thrilled with our achievements in this match.

Mellor and Whalley games were played next. Again, lots of learning took place and the girls tried hard, but we lost 2-0 against both teams. Georgia had moved into an attacking role, where she played well; Aleena and Hannah had a try at Goal keeping and Daisy showed progress and enjoyment in her defensive role.

Our final match was against St Mary's Langho. After playing most of the girls in different positions over the afternoon, we had worked out where the strength of individuals lay. Amaya, Khadijah and Alayna displayed real growth/progress and understanding of defence and worked well together, with some great tackles and interceptions. Abigail,  Hannah and Anna managed to get upfield on many more occasions in this match, which resulted in a goal from Abigail and our first ever draw (1-1). Matilda had a much better understanding of the GK role.

Looking at these scores, it is evident to see how much progress the team made over the afternoon. Many school teams contained children who play in different local teams - all our players are new to the sport. We are incredibly proud of your performances: your sportsmanship was impeccable; you all kept your heads held high and preserved and most importantly... you all smiled your way through the afternoon! The Lionesses started at grassroots girls, so who knows where you may end up if you all keep playing! Well done Girls.

Thanks to Mrs Redmayne and Mr Greenwood for helping to transport the children to Clitheroe.
